Relaxing bronchial smooth muscle;

It can reduce the tension of smooth muscle, dilate the airway; promote the release of endogenous adrenaline and norepinephrine, relax the airway smooth muscle; inhibit the release of calcium ions from the smooth muscle endoplasmic reticulum, reduce the intracellular calcium concentration and produce airway dilation . Theophylline has a stronger relaxing effect on smooth muscle but less than a beta agonist.

When the theophylline is injected intravenously or the plasma concentration of theophylline is higher than 20 μg/ml, toxicity may occur, which may be arrhythmia, increased heart rate, muscle fibrillation, epilepsy, transient hypotension or peripheral circulatory failure. When the concentration of theophylline is higher than 40μg/ml, fever, water loss, convulsions, etc. may occur, and severe cases may cause death due to respiratory and cardiac arrest, and pre-treatment of sedatives can be effectively prevented.
