Lorcaserin hydrochloride powder is an FDA-approved prescription weight-loss medication that, when used with diet and exercise, can help some overweight† adults with a weight-related medical problem, or obese adults, lose weight and keep it off. Lorcaserin hydrochloride is not known if Lorcaserin hcl when taken with other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal weight-loss products is safe and effective. Lorcaserin hydrochloride is not known if Lorcaserin hcl changes your risk of heart problems, stroke, or death due to heart problems or stroke.

Lorcaserin Function:

Lorcaserin powder is a selective 5-HT2C receptor agonist, and in vitro testing of the drug showed reasonable selectivity for 5-HT2C over other related targets. 5-HT2C receptors are located almost exclusively in the brain, and can be found in the choroid plexus, cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, amygdala, thalamus, andhypothalamus. The activation of 5-HT2C receptors in the hypothalamus is supposed to activate proopiomelanocortin(POMC) production and consequently promote weight loss through satiety. This hypothesis is supported by clinical trials and other studies. While Lorcaserin hydrochloride powder is generally thought that 5-HT2C receptors help to regulate appetite as well as mood, and endocrine secretion, the exact mechanism of appetite regulation is not yet known. Lorcaserin has shown 100x selectivity for 5-HT2C versus the closely related 5-HT2B receptor.

Lorcaserin hydrochlorideis a serotonin 2C receptor agonist. It hasbeen shown to decrease food consumption and promote sa tiety by selectivelyactivating serotonin 2C receptors in the brain.
Lorcaserin hcl is specifically indicated as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet andincreased physical activity for chronic weight management in clinically obeseadults (BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater) and overweight adults (BMI of 27 kg/m2 orgreater) with at least one weight-related comorbid condition.
Lorcaserin hcl is supplied as a tablet designed for oral administration. The recommendeddose is one 10mg tablet twice daily. Use of Lorcaserin hcl should be discontinued if 5%weight loss is not achieved by week 12 of treatment.

Side Effects
Nausea, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, constipation, or tiredness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: easy bleeding/bruising, enlarged breasts or abnormal breast milk production, mental/mood changes (such as confusion, depression, thoughts of suicide, unusual agitation, difficulty with attention/memory), shaking/twitching muscles, shortness of breath, slow/fast/irregular heartbeat, swelling ankles/feet/hands, unexplained fever.

If you are taking medication to treat diabetes, lorcaserin can increase your risk forlow blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Symptoms of low blood sugar include suddensweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling hands/feet. Tell your doctor right away about the reaction and the use of this product. Your doctor may need to adjust your medication(s).

Rarely, males may have a painful or prolonged erection lasting 4 or more hours. If this occurs, stop using this drug and get medical help right away, or permanent problems could occur.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash,itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

How should this medicine be used?
Lorcaserin comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food twice a day. Take lorcaserin at around the same times every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take lorcaserin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Lorcaserin may be habit forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or take it for a longer period of time than prescribed by your doctor.

If you do not lose a certain amount of weight during the first 12 weeks of your treatment, it is not likely that you will benefit from taking lorcaserin. Your doctor may tell you to stop taking lorcaserin if you do not lose enough weight during the first 12 weeks of your treatment.

Lorcaserin will help control your weight only if you continue to take it. Do not stop taking lorcaserin without talking to your doctor.
